Transportation Research Institute

The Transportation Institute began operations in October 1977 as an autonomous research unit in the Technion and as such, reports directly to the Technion's Executive Vice President for Research. The institute is a base for the research activities of faculty members from different academic units, active in the broad field of transportation research. Moreover, it constitutes a framework for joint activity in these areas between Technion units. The research institute is funded chiefly by government ministries and targeted at solving problems of great national significance in the fields of road safety, traffic control, road infrastructure, transportation planning, planning transportation systems, energy and the environment.

The institute's activities are carried out by over 30 members of different faculties: Civil and Environmental Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture and Town Planning, Industrial Engineering and Management, Medicine and Materials Engineering. An additional team of researchers - engineers, psychologists, statisticians, and others - are engaged in researching and surveying a variety of topics related to the transportation field. Available for their use in the institute, the researchers have laboratories, a library, computerized data banks and an administrative staff.

The institute maintains ties with economic and industrial organizations in the country in order to deepen the collaboration in the fields where it operates. It initiates projects with economic and industrial potential, integrating basic and applied research. In addition, the institute is engaged in diverse and continual distribution of information on transportation, road safety and other research areas. Information is disseminated both through seminars organized by the institute and via abstracts of its research papers that are sent to hundreds of subscribers.

The institute is recognized in Israel and throughout the world as a leader in the many fields of transportation research in which it has extensive experience.  The institute's research achievements and activities have contributed to improvement in road safety, transportation infrastructure, traffic control and quality of the environment.

Over the past few years, a prime objective of the Transportation Research Institute has been to raise public awareness and understanding of the area of transportation and road safety through the research capabilities of the institute's researchers.
