Transportation and Geo-Information Engineering

The division's activities are divided into two clusters. The first deals with the area of transportation and transport and the second focuses on mapping, geo-information and measurement. Every study area in the division has advanced ‘hi-tech' features, and the activities in both clusters are at the forefront of information science and modern information systems.
The activities in the transportation engineering cluster include the fields of transportation planning, traffic and transport, road engineering, road safety, roadways, and maintenance.

Transportation planning focuses on: behavior and forecast, demand and impact assessment, public transportation and transportation networks.
Traffic and transport, and road engineering focuses on: control, behavior and traffic arrangements, and road geometry.

Road safety focuses on: statistics, assessment, accessories, facilities and driver behavior.

Transport and maintenance focuses on: transport characterization and planning, transport evaluation and management, transport materials and recycling.

The activities in the mapping, geo-information and measurement cluster include, among others, photogammetry (analog and digital), remote sensoring (smart decryption systems, work with aerial photographs and satellite images - multi- and hyper-spectral images, computerized vision), digital cartography (computer supported), cadastre and land registry (two-dimensional analytical cadastre and three-dimensional cadastre), satellite geodesy and GPS (control networks for engineering and mapping purposes), and geographic information systems (GIS/LIS).

The Transportation Engineering study program

The transportation field is interdisciplinary, and requires that those working in it have, in addition to all their civil and transportation engineering knowledge, a strong understanding of subjects taught in other Technion faculties. Consequently, the range of courses the faculty offers students from the transportation perspective is limited. In light of these facts a new study program - "Civil Engineering - Transportation" - has been developed. The four-year study program is designed to provide engineers with unique specialization in the area of transportation, offering advanced courses, essential for their training and future jobs.

MSc in Road Safety

A transportation science program with specialization in road safety - this program is offered within the framework of the graduate program in transportation science. Outstanding students who complete this program will be able to continue on to doctoral studies, subject to the requirements of the Technion's School of Graduate Studies.
The program's graduates receive training in a variety of road safety topics. The program is based on existing courses given by the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Management, the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning, and the Quality Assurance and Reliability Interdisciplinary Program.

The mapping and geo-information study program

The four-year BSc program as well as the three-year B.A. program have been in existence for more than 30 years. As of 2002, the faculty has been offering a new undergraduate program (four year and three year tracks).

New Study Programs:

Master of Engineering Program - Non-thesis program in Mapping and Geo-information Engineering
This advanced training program allows students to broaden their knowledge in the field of mapping and geo-information. The program is especially appropriate for external students and enables those whose grades are between 75-80 to continue on to a graduate degree.

The Afikim Program

The Afikim Program is a unique study program offered jointly by the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning. The driving force behind the program is the linkage between two existing Technion programs: the undergraduate "BSc in Mapping and Geo-information" and the (non-thesis) "MSc in Architecture and Town Planning".

Master Degree in Land Studies

This unique program is offered jointly by the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the Faculty Architecture and Town Planning.
The program requires students to complete 49 points in 17 different courses and is based primarily on courses offered by the two faculties.
At present the program is given in the framework of the ME Technion-wide degree program and is intended for those holding an undergraduate degree in engineering.

Research

Research in the transportation and transport cluster is primarily done in the framework of the Transportation Research Institute (a Technion institute) and concentrates on innovative subjects. As the Information Technology Era moves into full swing, the range of activities has been expanded to include a broad variety of topics such as: geometry and traffic operation and planning (advanced traffic light systems and control centers, smart collection systems); the planning and economics of transportation (economic planning and assessment, transportation alternatives, forecasting land use); planning and analysis of transport structures (transport management systems, assessment and planning methods); transport materials, road safety and more...
Research in the mapping, geo-information and measurement cluster is, for the most part, carried out in the framework of the Mapping and Geodesy Research Center (a faculty center) and has been dealing in recent years almost completely with digital mapping, remote sensoring and geographic information systems.
