Structural Engineering

B.Sc. in Civil Engineering - Structural Engineering

Structural Engineering is an advanced and challenging field of civil engineering. This prestigious field focuses on analysis and design of structures in terms of strength, stability, and resistance to loads, including earthquakes. The structural engineer leads the design of a variety of structures such as residential buildings; halls; public, industrial and storage facilities; infrastructures; harbors and airports; bridges; water towers, etc. The structural engineer is a senior member in the design team that also includes entrepreneurs, architects, construction specialists, project managers, as well as geotechnical, transportation and environmental experts. At the base of the education and training in structural engineering are a sound theoretical foundation complemented by practicality and creativity. This unique combination of qualifications can also be put to use in design of structures in other disciplines such as aerospace structures, flight vehicles, shipbuilding, automotives, biomedicine, etc. The responsibility in leading the design team and in making decisions regarding the strength, stability and safety of the structure contribute to the prestige of this unique profession and dictate the characteristics of the education and training program.

Individual and creative thinking, professionalism, leadership, and decision-making are an integral part of the structural engineer's everyday activity. Use of advanced material systems and integration of computerized systems and advanced design tools are among the modern challenges in structural engineering, affecting both the present and future realities. Accordingly, structural engineers, especially those with higher academic degrees, are involved in research and development of advanced structural systems such as deployable structures, intelligent structures, skeletons of mega-cities, underwater facilities, artificial islands, construction in outer space, etc.

The ever-growing need for stronger, taller, lighter, and even smarter structures, the interaction of theoretical and practical aspects, and the multiple human interfaces in everyday work - all these combine to shape the attractive visage of the profession.

Students graduating from the structural engineering program earn a unique academic degree:

Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering - Structures

The program is offered under the academic auspices of the division of structural engineering and construction management at the Technion's Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering - historically the first of its kind in the country (and still leading). The teaching staff includes faculty members, international experts in research and practice, and leading practitioners.

Graduates of the program can also continue towards the Master's and Doctor's degrees. These higher studies involve advanced research and development of innovative directions in structural engineering and in related scientific fields.

Registration and licensing of engineers

The degree in structural engineering is recognized by the Ministry of Industry, Trade & Labor, and is the only one among those offered by the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering, that qualifies for registration and subsequent licensing in the roll of structural engineers.

Professional Career

The professional career of the program graduates covers a variety of fields associated with the design and construction of structures and infrastructures, in Israel and throughout the world. The unique combination of theory and practice ensures fast promotion to key positions in private and public companies as well as in state and municipal agencies.

The sound foundation provided by the program and the skills developed through the course, also allow the development of professional careers in adjacent fields such as construction engineering, supervision of engineering projects, project management, and geotechnical engineering. Graduates of the program also hold key positions in firms and industries that deal with broader aspects of structural engineering such as the aerospace industry, military industries, etc.

The curriculum

The four-years program towards the degree in civil engineering - structural engineering starts with establishment of a sound scientific basis in mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science, and the basics of civil engineering. In the sequel, the program offers basic and advanced courses in structural engineering and provides the student with the concepts and tools for structural design, strength- and stability analyses, foundation design, and design for wind and seismic loads. Emphasis is on development of analytical and judgmental skills and creative problem-solving techniques. To that end, the program combines analytical and technological courses with advanced courses in design, computational mechanics, and structural dynamics.

The high-level requirements, the knowledge and skills acquired, and the inclusion in the prestigious Technion graduate family, prepares the students for successful coping with the future's challenges and singles them out as leaders in the various fields of engineering.
