National Building Research Institute (NBRI)

The National Building Research Institute (NBRI) had been established in the early 1950's and known as the Building Research Station. In 1988 it had become the NBRI, under an agreement between the Israeli Government-Ministry of Construction and Housing and the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology.
The main objectives of the National Building Research Institute (NBRI) are to advance knowledge in building sciences in general, and in aspects of building and construction in particular; to solve long-range problems of the building sector through methodological research and development; to provide support in solving short-term needs in areas where its expertise is crucial; and to disseminate knowledge and transfer technology.



The NBRI activity is carried out through its research departments and its knowledge dissemination and technology transfer unit.

The professional activities of NBRI cover a wide variety of specialized domains:

The NBRI employs 60 researchers, technicians and support staff.


Research is carried out in five departments:

The structural engineering department activity includes areas of:
• Earthquake engineering
• Damage and repair of buildings
• Retrofit of existing buildings
• Assessment of existing structures
• Strength and serviceability requirements of concrete and steel structures
• Mechanics of concrete and reinforced concrete
• Steel structures
• Optimization of design
• Composite structures
• prefabricated systems

• Pre-stressed elements
• Structures for special loading conditions (wind, snow, temperature, vibrations, dynamic and impact loading)
• Numerical and analytical methods

The building materials and technology department includes activities areas of:
• Utilization of fly ash
• Oil shale and other wastes and by-products

• Analysis and development of new building materials and components
• Polymeric and bituminous materials for coatings and waterproofing
• Corrosion of steel in concrete durability of building materials

• Industrialization of finishing work in buildings
• Adaptation of materials to special uses


The construction management and economics department includes activities in the areas of:
• Technological forecasting
• Evaluation of long-range policy alternatives in the development of the building sector

• Computerized information systems
• Economic analysis and building policy alternatives and construction methods
• Management techniques and systems in the fields of construction planning
• Organization and control
• Site management
• Life-cycle costing of building systems and building equipment
• Artificial intelligence and computer-aided design for building construction and site management


The physical performance of buildings department includes activities in the areas of:
• Hygrothermal analysis and properties of materials, components and buildings
• Air quality and moisture problems in buildings
• Building climatology and thermal analysis of buildings and of urban areas
• Passive thermal control systems and means
• Ventilation and wind effects
• Acoustic performance of components and spaces
• Effect of environmental noise on buildings
• Fire safety, building services, intelligent buildings, etc
• Development of criteria and evaluation methodologies for overall performance of buildings
• Development of test methods

The geotechnical engineering department includes activities in the areas of:

The activities of NBRI are concentrated in the following major directions:

- Research - Research in all the above-mentioned areas may be either short-term or long-term, and sponsored by government, industry, design and consulting firms, or international institutes (universities, research institutes, governments, research funds, etc.).

- Technology Transfer - This serves as the coordinating arm between the practical needs, as identified by government, industry, and private offices, and NBRI capabilities and knowledge.

The NBRI activity is tightly connected with the research activity of the Structural Engineering and Construction Management Unit at the Faculty of Civil & Environmental Engineering.
