Flow Parameters Characterization

Flow parameters Characterization at the bottom of a stream

In the first stage a sequence of waterfall and pool pairs were created by a high flow flow simulating flood conditions. During the measurement phase, a marker was inserted at a known concentration to the ground (yellow circle) and the concentrations were measured at points located downstream (white X). By comparing the concentration series to flow equations the flow characteristics of the soil were extracted. It can be seen that the width of the area in which there is color expands downstream and from the color visible in the pool it can be concluded that there is an exchange of water between the ground and the surface stream water.
The experiment was conducted as part of a final project for a bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering by Nir Marom under the supervision of Prof. Uri Shavit.
